[ENG] It's Pie Day!

more like "Pie Experiment Day" haha...  Since i didn't really get them right, and i was playing with the oven temperature & how long they need to be baked. But that's okay... Even failures taste sweet when you can eat them, right? lol
Btw i made kimchi & 2 pies that day :DD

Lemon Meringue Pie
Recipe from Allrecipes - Grandma's Lemon Meringue Pie.

The lemon filling actually turned out really good, sweet, sour, smooth, it's soo good that i can just eat it as it is.

Then i whipped the eggs white for the meringue, at this point it looked okay and quite glossy.

But when i scooped it into the pie, it turned "grainy" and lost its gloss. I made meringue before and it turned out good, so i don't know what's wrong with this, maybe because the eggs were not quite fresh?

I created the peaks with a back of a spoon.

I baked it on the upper rack so the top get brown faster.

It looked quite good at this point. Then i let it cool, and keep them in the fridge overnight covered with foil.

The next day...

The meringue shrinked ;(( and the pie became watery. The texture of the filling was almost like a jelly, and the meringue feel dry too. I supposed to baked them for 10 minutes, but since i want the top to brown nicely, i almost baked them for 20 minutes and turned the temperature up to about 190 degree when it's supposed to be 175. I don't know if i overbaked them, of because i covered them with foil. Hmmm...

But overall, it still tasted pretty good. I don't like the texture but the lemon filling tasted great and so did the pie crust. But the meringue was really dry.

Pai Susu (Milk Pie)
Do you know Bali's famous pai susu (milk pie)?
source: http://www.agenkuliner.com/2012/02/pie-susu-asli-enaaaak.html
It's the signature Bali souvenir pie, a simple milk mini pie, but taste so good and addictive *_*

I tried to remake that pie, with no recipe whatsoever, just pie crust, 3 eggs, 1 can of condensed milk and see what happen lol. Well, but i made the pie crust myself, so i guess that's one recipe ^^ Check here on how to make the crust. I baked a one big pie instead of small mini ones.

I just pour the filling to the prebaked pie crust and pop them in the oven.

Taraaa!!

So, did it taste like the famous Bali milk pie? Nope. lol Well, similar but not nearly as good. The filling is too thick so it tastes overly sweet, and the texture is more like jelly than a smooth mousse. But i do think the crust is better since i use butter, not  margarin ;) So, now i know that the famous milk pie not just consist of eggs and condensed milk haha...

Btw, i found a blogpost about the making of the original bali milk pie. Check this out! They really make the mini pie crust by hand, one by one *_*
